Summary of some interesting
rides:
This
year the carnage began early. First, while during a summer ride at
Faerber’s, I was jogging along on loose reins behind Bill Mirola and Bristol, I
was suddenly engulfed in a wall of green leaves. About the same time Bill
gave out a gargled war whoop, which caused me concern that his body might be
lying just ahead. Soon we were less out of control and discovered that
Bill had been clotheslined by a killer vine, which is what pulled a huge branch
down into my face. Bill pulled this branch down with his neck leaving a
nasty scrape on his neck and proving that he also has a fairly strong neck as
well. Fortunately he was OK, otherwise his carcass might yet be hanging
there in the woods. Then in another unprovoked attack of the killer vines,
my lovely and gracious bride, Barb, and I were out for a trail ride and she too
was clotheslined much like Bill with a similar fire engine red scrape on her
neck. Finally, knowing we were now all on the lookout, we yet had still
another attack, Pam Faerber was clotheslined this time around her foot as she
was bounding over a jump. The result was a fall onto the jump bruising
ribs and twisting her neck. While on the hunt Missy, graciously
volunteered to be this year’s Queen by taking a tumble at Luris’s. Not
quite sure what happened, but she was helping as whipper-in and likely was
concentrating more on hounds than horse. I’m sure we will get more detail
at the Cropper’s party. Then not to be outdone, Gloria’s horse, while
cantering through a cut corn field, and who so clearly enjoys hunting gave a
huge joyous buck that caused Gloria to do a flip off her horse cracking some
ribs—Gloria not Austin. Thus, as the carnage continues, Gloria is now part
of the Queen’s court. Needing a King, TJ Cole volunteered for the duty by
getting crosswise with a sapling in the woods at the North Farm. Then in
an encore performance Gloria’s horse slipped on bad footing resulting in a
second fall—fortunately with no injury. And, Katherine Presson also
slipped on similar footing and came a cropper as well. Fortunately, no
injuries except to pride—again we will expand on all this at the Cropper’s
party.
Swallow Ridge Hunt (October 30)
This
year we were fortunate to add a new venue to our territory thanks to the
generosity of Caroline Johnson and her parents Mike and Molly Wadsworth.
Swallow Ridge Farm is a beautiful setting with open fields, rolling woods and a
large lake. Aside from a couple of visits by hunt members to build jumps
Caroline and her family worked tirelessly to open trails through the
woods. Indeed, as you look at the pictures below you will see that
literally every blade of grass stood attention as hounds and horses
passed. After the hunt, Mike and Molly hosted a fine
field-in.
Christmas Parade
This
year the Hunt was asked to ride in the Christmas Parade through downtown
Zionsville. So the search went out for “bomb proof” horses resulting in
five riders in formal attire and horses properly braided. Thus, Anna
Bedwell, Donna Huffman, Bob Gresham, Chris Davis and Tom Santelli represented
the Hunt. Barb Munson and George Huffman walked along carrying lead ropes
to assure safety should a horse decide he really didn’t like parades. As
it happened, no problems and it was great fun.
Hunt Ball
The Hunt
Ball was a huge success and more importantly a lot of fun. After an
appropriate number of Cocktails were consumed (to lubricate the bidding), Lu
Hamilton, Honorary Huntsman led an auction to name the hounds of our new “N”
litter.
Despite the lousy weather this fall, good
hunting was found. A good weather and a fine field in porduced a great day in
Terra Haute. Great scenting conditions and a fast pack provided a
tremendous hunt on Thanksgiving morning. The hounds not only viewed fox and
coyote but caught our "fox" during the third run. A special "thanks" to the
friends of the pack who purchased the right to name our puppy transfers from
Wayne- DuPage! Please remember that some of our best hunting comes after the
first of the year beginning with the New Years Day hunt and
breakfast.
We still need a home for a
retired female foxhound Sam. The Greshams have adopted Flirt. She had a
little trouble learning to go up and down stairs, but otherwise is well on her
way fitting into the Windy Crest pack. Please give Lu a call if you would like
to try one for a weekend.
Mr. John Stolle continues to
manage the kennel in the smoothness manner. Thanks go to John and wife, Sherry,
who helps whenever there is a need. Sherry continues to do a tremendous
job in maintaining the books and finances of the hunt. We are truly grateful for
both of their
efforts.
The Hunt would like to extend
a huge thank you to Dr. Jenny Glore for her countless volunteer hours and
discounted vetting bill taking care of our hounds. She is a gifted Veterinarian,
who works for Woodland Animal Clinic. We are blessed to have her not only
as a member of our Hunt, but also as whipper-in.
MFH Elizabeth Johnson and MFH
Pat Righter continue to provide the leadership that guides our Hunt. We
are fortunate to have many members who volunteer their time and talents to host
parties and activities, field-ins, tailgates, trail clearing, and hound walking.
